Concepts → Data Assets

In the Data Catalog, data assets provide a centralized, searchable inventory of data, enabling data accessibility and governance across the organization. The Data Catalog enhances asset usability through metadata management, domain and glossary assignments, tagging, documentation, certification, and ownership assignment.

Purpose

  • Provide a centralized inventory of data
  • Improve data discovery and accessibility
  • Support data governance and compliance
  • Enable consistent documentation and classification of data

Data assets scope

Each data asset type appears as a tile in the Data Assets section, displaying the asset icon, asset name, and total number of items available. Data Assets include:

  • Data sources
  • Schemas
  • Business schemas
  • Dashboards
  • Business notebooks

User roles and permissions

Data asset management is governed through role-based access control:

  • The SuperRole or Data Governor role can create and manage data assets.
  • The Data Catalog User role can explore data assets and manage only those assets to which they have edit access. This role can also request access to assets they don’t have Edit access to.

Restricting these capabilities ensures data assets governance remains controlled and consistent across the organization.

Data assets exploration

The Data Catalog provides capabilities that support data asset discovery and navigation, including:

  • Searching across data assets, domains, and glossary terms
  • Applying multiple filters simultaneously to narrow results
  • Refreshing asset listings to reflect the latest state
  • Downloading data assets (available starting 2026.3.0)

For more information, refer to References → Data Catalog Exploration.

Data assets filtering

Data assets support filtering using core attributes, including:

  • Asset type, such as schema, dashboard, column, or business schema
  • Domain
  • Owner information
  • Tags

In addition to contextual filters that appear dynamically based on the selected asset type, such as the Term filter that displays when a Column or View Column is selected.

Data assets metadata governance

Data assets contain metadata that describes how data is structured, governed, and used across the platform. This metadata includes ownership, lineage, classification, documentation, and relationships to other assets.

The Data Catalog allows contributors to save metadata edits as drafts, enabling review and approval by Data Governors before publishing. This controlled draft workflow helps maintain data accuracy and governance for metadata updates, including:

  • Domain assignments
  • Glossary term assignments
  • Documentation updates
  • Certification status
  • Rating and review

Data Catalog users can edit or delete their drafts and track their submission status through clear notifications. Drafts are visible only to Data Catalog users and Data Governors, ensuring secure collaboration during the review process.

For more information, refer to Data Catalog Manager → Submit and Track Requests.

Note

The Metadata draft mode and approval workflow are available starting 2026.3.0.
