Concepts → Domains

Domains in Incorta's Data Catalog provide a hierarchical organizational structure for data assets, enabling logical grouping and management of related content. This structure helps users navigate, discover, and understand data assets based on business context rather than technical implementation.

Benefits

  • Improved Data Discovery: Users can find data assets by navigating through business domains
  • Enhanced Data Governance: Clear ownership and organization of data assets
  • Simplified Navigation: Logical grouping reduces complexity in large data environments
  • Contextual Understanding: Assets are presented within their business context

Domain Structure

Domains in Incorta can be organized in a hierarchical structure:

  • Parent Domains: Top-level categories representing major business areas (e.g., Finance, Human Resources)
  • Sub-domains: Child domains nested under parent domains, representing more specific business areas
  • Assets: Data objects assigned to domains, including schemas, business schemas, dashboards, and data sources

Permissions

  • Browsing: All users can browse domains and access the data assets they have permission to view. Domains serve as a navigation and discovery tool for everyone in the organization.
  • Creation: Only users with the Data Governor role can create, modify, or delete domains. This restriction ensures that the domain structure remains consistent and properly governed.
