Data Catalog Manager → Manage Data Assets

The Data Catalog Manager enables you to browse, organize, and maintain data assets, ensuring they are properly classified, documented, and certified.

Certify an Asset

Here are the steps to certify a business view, for example.

  1. Navigate to the Data Catalog tab in the navigation bar.
  2. Select Explore to browse available data assets.
  3. Filter by Type: Business Schema to locate relevant schemas.
  4. Select a business schema.
  5. Navigate to the Tables tab to see available views.
  6. Select a specific view to certify.
  7. Select the Information icon (ⓘ) in the top-right corner of the page.
  8. Select the Certify button under Certification.
  9. The view will now display a certification badge (🏅) next to its name.
Note

As a Data Governor, you can also certify schemas and objects directly within their respective tools. This includes:

View Certification Status

  • Certified assets display a certification badge (🏅) in list views and detail pages of the Data Catalog.
  • The information panel for any asset shows its certification status

Find Certified Assets

  1. Navigate to the Data Catalog → Explore section.
  2. Use the Certified filter button to show only certified assets.
  3. Browse the filtered results to find trusted data assets.

Manage Domains

The Data Catalog Manager enables you to create domains to categorize data assets that are critical to your organization's operations.

Create Domains

  1. Navigate to the Data Catalog tab in the top navigation bar
  2. Select + New in the Action bar.
  3. Select Domains from the drop-down list.
  4. In the Create Domain dialog:
    • Enter a Name for the domain (required).
    • Select a Parent Domain if this is a sub-domain (or leave as "None" for a top-level domain).
    • Navigate to the Owners tab to assign domain owners.
    • Navigate to the Data Assets tab to associate data assets.
    • Navigate to the Documentation tab to add descriptive information.
  5. Select Create.
Notes
  • Domain creation and management are restricted to users with the Data Governor role.
  • Before 2025.7.2, the domain hierarchy levels were restricted to three.
  • Starting 2025.7.2, the domain organization supports up to five levels. This enhancement enables more granular content categorization and organization, accommodating complex organizational structures and detailed data governance frameworks for improved content discoverability.

Assign Owners

  1. In the Create/Edit Domain dialog, select the Owners tab.
  2. Use the search field to find users or groups.
  3. Select users to assign as domain owners.
    Domain owners are responsible for managing and maintaining the domain and its assets

Assign Data Assets

  1. In the Create/Edit Domain dialog, select the Data Assets tab
  2. Choose the type of assets to associate with the domain:
    • Schemas
    • Business Schemas
    • Dashboards
    • Data Sources
  3. Use the filter to search for specific assets.
  4. Select the checkboxes next to assets to assign them to the domain.
  5. The "Selected" counter shows how many assets have been chosen.

Add Documentation

  1. In the Create/Edit Domain dialog, select the Documentation tab.
  2. Use the rich text editor to add detailed information about the domain.
  3. Format text using the toolbar options (font, size, bold, italic, etc.)
  4. Include suggested information such as:
    • Domain purpose and scope
    • Usage guidelines
    • Contact information
    • Related domains
    • Update history

Manage Glossary Terms

The Data Catalog Manager enables you to define glossary or business terms to navigate through the data assets easily.

Create a Business Term with Classification

Note

Only users with the Data Governor role can configure and modify classification levels and apply classifications to data.

  1. From the Data Catalog home page, navigate to the Glossary Terms section.
  2. Select View All to see all glossary terms.
  3. Select + New in the Action bar.
  4. Select Business Term from the drop-down list.
  5. In the Create Business Term dialog:
    • Enter a Name for the business term.
    • Select a Parent Group if applicable (or leave as "None").
    • Select the Classification level from the drop-down list.
    • Navigate to the Data Assets tab to associate the term with specific data columns.
    • Switch between Schemas and Business Schemas subtabs to locate relevant columns.
    • Select the checkboxes for columns that should have this classification applied.
  6. Select Create to save the business term and apply the classification.

Create a Term Group

  1. From the Data Catalog home page, select View All in the Glossary Terms section.
  2. Select + New in the Action bar.
  3. Select Term Group from the drop-down list.
  4. In the Create Term Group dialog:
    • Enter a Name for the glossary term (required).
    • Select a Parent Group if this is a sub-group (or leave as "None" for top-level).
    • Add descriptive information in the Documentation text field.
  5. Select Create.

Manage Top Tags

The Data Catalog Manager enables you to set tags to label your data assets and sources to retrieve later when browsing or searching.

Create a Tag

  1. From the Data Catalog home page, navigate to the Top Tags section
  2. Select + Tag.
  3. In the Create Tag dialog:
    • Enter a Name for the tag.
    • Under Assign Assets,
    • Switch between Schemas, Business Schemas, Dashboards, Data Sources, and Notebooks subtabs to locate relevant columns, dashboards, and notebooks if applicable.
    • Select the checkboxes for items that should have this tag applied.
  4. Select Create to save the tag.

View Tags

  1. Select View All in the Top Tags section.
  2. Review the created tags:
    • Name
    • Number of Data Assets tagged
    • Owner
  3. Select Explore Assets to navigate through the assets.
    • The tag appears on the associated schemas.
  4. Select Edit or delete to modify or remove the tag.
